60s dresses & clothes.

We love 60s fashion with its playful look.

Style icons of the 60s.

60s fashion was extremely stylish from the early 60s to the late 60s.
In the early 60s, it was style icons like Jackie O with perfectly tailored pencil dresses and two-piece suits as we saw them in the late 50s. Dresses and skirts in the early 60s still went to and just above the knee, and women adorned themselves with white pearls or perhaps a little "pillbox hat". Jackie O made a huge impact on her appearance and women all over the world copied her amazing style.
After the assassination of Jackie O's husband, US President John F. Kennedy, Jackie O was no longer in the spotlight and new style icons were sought.
One of the new style icons of the early 60s was the beautiful Brigitte Bardot. She was the opposite of Jackie O', where Jackie O's style was very classic and mature, Brigitte Bardot was challenging, colorful and sometimes (in the eyes of the time) a bit silly.
English designer Mary Quant also became popular during this time with her "miniskirts" which were extremely short and her collections were in fun playful prints and colors. Like other designers of the time, "fashion is fun" was the theme of the 60s, and with it came the big round collars and bows, fun prints and colors, and the miniskirt.
In the mid-60s, it was supermodel Twiggy with her short pixie cut that made younger women cut their hair short. It was during this time that the young wild look was popular and the fashion dress with prints inspired by "modern art" and "pop art" in bright colors.

The 60s dress.

The dress with fitted bodice and swing skirt hem from the late 50s fashion continued into the 60s, albeit with a shorter skirt. The colors were stronger and prints were wilder, but with a more decent neckline. Most often, tops and dresses had a decent boat neckline with or without a round collar or with a small high turtleneck collar.
However, it wasn't long before the skirt was on its way out in favor of the less form-fitting mini dress. How short a skirt/dress was in the 60s had little to do with how great the legs of the person wearing it were, but was more an expression of confidence. The short dresses were not intended to attract men's sexual interest, but to attract men's attention so that women could then decide if the interest was mutual.
In general, 60s clothing fashion had a more youthful look, and the "baby doll" dress was a clear example of this. The big bows, big round collars, pastels and polka dots were all details that made women look like little girls. The more youthful and innocent, the better.

60s colors and prints.

Colors and prints were first inspired by "pop art" and the "modern art movement" also known as "Mod". Black and white checks, stripes and polka dots were popular prints within Mod culture. Mod dresses with white contrasts on collars and cuffs.
Later, psychedelic prints in bright colors were introduced. There was no such thing as "too much" in this era.
