60s style icons

The fashion of the 1960s was largely shaped by the style icons of the time.

At the start of the decade, Jackie Kennedy (Jackie O) was one of the most influential women in the fashion world. Her elegant style of tailored pencil dresses, two-piece suits and classic accessories set the standard for the sophisticated early 60s. Pearl necklaces, tiny pillbox hats and simple cuts became iconic elements of her style.

Later in the decade, fashion became more youthful and experimental. Brigitte Bardot represented a more playful and daring style with colors, short dresses and a more relaxed attitude.

One of the most influential designers of the 1960s was Mary Quant, who made the miniskirt famous and introduced a new generation to fashion's motto: fashion should be fun.

In the mid-60s, supermodel Twiggy became a symbol of the new youth culture with her short pixie cut and iconic mod look. Her style inspired a generation to embrace shorter dresses, graphic prints and a more minimalist silhouette.

The classic 60s dress

In the early 1960s, some of the silhouettes from the late 50s continued, including dresses with fitted bodices and swing skirts. But the skirts gradually became shorter and the colors became stronger.

Later in the decade, the mini dress became a symbol of youth and freedom.

Typical characteristics of 60s dresses are:

• short or knee-length lengths

• A-line silhouettes

• graphic prints and contrast details

• large collars, bows or decorative buttons

• bright colors or black and white contrasts

The popular baby-doll dress was also a favorite in the 60s. The loose silhouette, pastel colors and playful details gave the dresses a young and iconic look.

Colors and prints played a big role in 1960s fashion.

Early in the decade, the style was inspired by the Mod movement and art movements like pop art and modern art. Here, graphic patterns were the order of the day:

• black and white checks

• stripes

• polka dots

• contrast collars and cuffs

Later in the decade, colors became even more intense with psychedelic prints and bold color combinations. In the 60s, one rule applied: more was more.
