Why we love cardigans

The fit
Most of our cardigans from brands such as Emmy Design and Weekend Doll are cut at the waist, which makes them especially flattering with high-waisted trousers and skirts, as well as worn over dresses.

Material
Cardigans from Emmy Design are primarily made from merino wool and should preferably be hand washed or simply aired, as wool is naturally self-cleaning. If you prefer a cardigan that can be washed more easily, look for cotton styles, such as those from Palava.

An alternative to a jacket
A fitted, waist-length cardigan can be a lovely alternative to a jacket worn over a dress.

A versatile choice for your wardrobe
Wear your cardigan as a top by buttoning it all the way up, or wear it open over a top or dress. This gives you a versatile piece that can be styled in several different ways.
Vintage-inspired cardigans and knitwear for women
At Mondo Kaos, you’ll find vintage-inspired cardigans, retro knitted tops and feminine sweaters for women who love classic cuts and timeless details. Our selection consists of newly produced, vintage-inspired knitwear with fits and designs inspired especially by fashion from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
Discover cropped cardigans, fitted sweaters, knitted tops and sweater vests. Many styles feature characteristic details such as puff sleeves, cable knits, ribbed trims, openwork patterns, decorative buttons and beautiful colour combinations. What they all have in common is a feminine vintage-inspired look and a waist-defining fit that makes them easy to style with dresses, skirts and high-waisted trousers.
Vintage-inspired cardigans inspired by the 1940s and 1950s
Cardigans were an important part of women’s fashion in the 1940s and 1950s. They were often cropped and fitted, with defined shoulders, pretty buttons and ribbed trims ending around the waist. The shorter length paired perfectly with the high-waisted skirts and trousers of the era and helped create the classic hourglass silhouette.
Our vintage-inspired cardigans combine historical details with modern comfort. Wear a cropped cardigan over a dress or pair it with a swing skirt for a feminine 1950s-inspired look. You can also combine it with jeans or wide-leg trousers for a more relaxed retro outfit.
Cardigans with cable knits and classic details
Cable knits, openwork patterns and decorative trims give cardigans a classic look with clear references to traditional knitwear. Puff shoulders can create a more defined upper body, while a close-fitting ribbed hem accentuates the waist and creates a flattering fit.
Choose a simple, solid-coloured cardigan for a versatile vintage-inspired wardrobe, or opt for a style with patterns, contrasting colours or distinctive buttons if you prefer a more eye-catching look.
Vintage-inspired sweaters and knitted tops
A vintage-inspired sweater or knitted top can be worn on its own and is a warm alternative to a regular top or shirt. Styles often have a fitted or slightly relaxed silhouette with round necklines, V-necks, short sleeves or long sleeves.
Style a fitted knitted top with a pencil skirt for an elegant 1940s-inspired look or with a swing skirt for a feminine style inspired by the 1950s. A retro sweater also pairs well with high-waisted jeans and trousers for a more relaxed everyday look.
A versatile choice for your wardrobe
A cardigan can be worn open as an extra layer or buttoned up and worn as a knitted top. Button it all the way up for a classic and feminine look, or wear it open over a top, shirt or dress. This gives you a versatile piece that can be styled across seasons and occasions.
Lighter styles are ideal for cool summer evenings and transitional seasons, while warmer knitwear is perfect for autumn and winter. A vintage-inspired cardigan is therefore a practical addition to your wardrobe.
Cardigans in wool and cotton
The material affects the cardigan’s look, warmth and fit. Wool and merino wool are naturally warm and temperature-regulating, while cotton often feels lighter and is well suited to milder weather. Some styles also contain blended fibres that provide extra softness, shape retention or stretch.
Always check the material composition and care instructions for each cardigan. Proper care helps your knitwear retain both its shape and colour, so you can enjoy it season after season.
Find the right size and fit
Vintage-inspired cardigans and knitted tops can have a shorter and more fitted silhouette than modern knitwear. We therefore recommend comparing your own bust, waist and length measurements with the size guide for each style rather than simply choosing your usual size.
The material and structure of the knit affect how much the garment stretches. Some cardigans fit closely to the body, while others offer more room around the bust and sleeves. Choose the fit that works best depending on whether you want to wear your cardigan as a top or as an extra layer over other clothing.
