We have many different types of vintage tops, shirts, t-shirts and blouses at Mondo Kaos, and what they all have in common is that they are very feminine in their expression. We have everything from loose-fit blouses with short frill sleeves and high necks with tie bows in classic 1930s style, to short-sleeve V-neck fitted shirts and pinup t-shirts inspired by the 1950s. We have several different models of the iconic 'pussy bow' blouse inspired by several fashion decades, including feminine vintage style à la 30s and 40s with soft boat collars and light sleeves from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury and The House of Foxy and classic 50's and 60's high neck, short puff sleeve fitted shirts with tie neck from Heart of Haute .

The pussy bow blouse is a vintage top or shirt with a sewn-on tie bow in the neckline that can be tied like a bow - in the old days, bows were tied around kittens' necks to tell the difference between them, hence the name. Before it was given the popular name pussy bow, this type of vintage top was known as a lavallière (FR) and has been part of the fashion world since the late 19th century, when they were popular in France in a very voluminous version, and later in the USA in a simpler version, known from Charles Gibson's iconic 'Gibson Girls'.

By the 1930s and 1940s, the bow detail had become more simple in its design and was sewn onto either a blouse or a shirt with a V-neck or keyhole neckline. The Second World War affected the fashion world with various restrictions, so it was not possible to use extra fabric as details à la frills, and all designs were therefore simple, minimalistic and masculine. Therefore, the pussy-bow blouse became popular in these two decades because it added something feminine to the very military-inspired fashion. In the late 1950s, the pussy bow blouse was made a 'power-piece' by Chanel and YSL, and by the 1960s it had become a fixture in western working women's wardrobes. Back when women entered the workforce, there was no definite workwear for them, so they looked to their male colleagues and started wearing skirt suits with the feminine pussy bow blouse, to give the conservative suit a powerful, feminine counterpoint - in hit TV series Mad Men, which takes place in the USA in the 60s, several of the female characters are seen in power outfits with pussy bow blouses.

Until the mid-1800s, there were no shirts made specifically for women because they were commonly worn with dresses . Slowly, however, fashion changed, so that women began to wear skirts and blouses for everyday life instead of large dresses, and in the 1900s, more types of feminine women's shirts began to appear. In the 30s they were detailed, loose fitting and had large dolman sleeves and cuffs, in the 40s they were tight, angular and minimalistic and in the 50s and 60s they became fitted and the feminine curves and details came back as women entered the labor market and i.a. started working in an office where there was a formal dress code.
