Did you know that sequins are a many thousand year old invention. Originally, one wore one's coins (Arabic sikka - later sequins in English) sewn on the clothes, close to the body, and it became a decorative sign of prosperity. When Tutankhamun's tomb was opened in the 1920s, clothes with tiny round pieces of gold sewn onto them were found. Obsessed with all things Egyptian, the fashion conscious took this on board and sequins became all the rage on party dresses, with the tiny metallic 'sequins' glinting in subdued, festive lighting.
