How to create a 1940s look

1940s fashion was shaped to a great extent by the Second World War and the rationing that affected everyday life throughout much of the decade. Materials were scarce, so clothing became simpler, more functional and practical than in the 1930s. Silhouettes were sharp and relatively fitted, with an emphasis on defined shoulders, a clearly marked waist and midi-length skirts.

Dresses and skirts often featured a simple A-line or a more fitted pencil silhouette, while the shirt dress became one of the decade’s most characteristic styles. At the same time, trousers became a much more important part of women’s wardrobes. High-waisted trousers with straight or wide legs were both practical and fashionable and are now one of the most recognisable elements of the 1940s look.

Towards the end of the decade, fashion changed significantly. In 1947, Christian Dior introduced his famous New Look, which stood in clear contrast to the more restrained silhouettes of the war years. Waists became even more defined, shoulders softer and skirts longer and fuller. This also marked the beginning of the feminine hourglass silhouette that would later come to define 1950s fashion.

It is precisely the contrast between functional wartime style and the more feminine post-war fashion that makes the 1940s such an interesting decade. Many of these elements still work beautifully in a modern wardrobe, especially shirt dresses, high-waisted trousers, midi skirts and styles with a strong focus on the waist.

What defines 1940s fashion?

You do not have to go all-in on vintage to create a beautiful 1940s-inspired look. Often, it is the individual details that make the difference. A pair of high-waisted trousers, a feminine shirt or the right dress can create the look on its own – and you can always add shoes, stockings and accessories for a stronger vintage feel.
