50s Dresses & Clothes
We love 50s fashion, as it was in this decade that the focus on the female form really started to take off. In 1947, Christian Dior focused on the hourglass figure with his "New Look" collection, and throughout the 50s, fashion was characterized by the hourglass silhouette that celebrates the female form. We love Dior for this tribute!
In the early 50s, it was mainly dresses that dominated the fashion scene. The three most popular 50s dress styles were the swing dress, the shirt dress and the fitted pencil dress. The 50s dress focused on the classic hourglass silhouette with a bust, high waist and full hips and buttocks. The most important thing for the 50s dress was that the waist was defined and the bust, hips and buttocks appeared fuller. And the 50s dress always went below the knee.
The 50s dress
In the classic wardrobe, the 50s swing dress, the 50s shirt dress and the slim fitted 50s dress were all must-haves. The 50s swing dress is characterized by a full, round-cut skirt, usually worn with a petticoat underneath to give extra fullness to the bottom and to make the waist look even smaller.
For swing dresses, shirt dresses and fitted pencil dresses, the waist is always defined and the bottom always goes below the knee. The 50s dress can be long-sleeved, short-sleeved or sleeveless. Swing dresses and shirt dresses from the 50s often have pockets so that they are not only feminine but also practical.
In the early 50s, the vast majority of women wore dresses, even when they were at work, looking after children or doing other household chores. Therefore, it was important that the dress was both practical and easy to move around in. Therefore, the shirt dress was the most popular for the homemaker.
The dress was characterized by having a swing or a-line skirt, as well as having a button closure from the v-neckline down to the waist, or all the way down the dress. And 50s shirt dresses always had pockets. The dress was usually made of cotton and came in lots of nice colors and prints. If the woman was working in an office, for example, she would wear a swing or pencil dress to work.
We have 50s dresses & clothes in large sizes
We love 50s clothing because it's first and foremost feminine as it focuses on the female form. You don't have to be super slim to wear it, like many of the clothes that today's fashion dictates, but 50s dresses and clothes look great in plus size.
The cuts of 50s dresses and other 50s clothes are designed to allow for bust, tummy and hips, but you can also wear them beautifully if you are slim. That's also why we have many of our 50s dresses in large sizes from size small to at least size x-large, most in 2x-large, and many even up to 3x-large, 4x-large, and 5x-large.
