Why we love the wrap dress.

At Mondo Kaos, we love the wrap dress because it's a versatile dress that can be worn for all occasions and because its closure is adjustable, meaning it always fits perfectly. In addition, the wrap dress is designed to accentuate the feminine shape by defining the waist with the tie belt and creating a silhouette with the V-shaped neckline. The wrap dress is the go-to dress for many women and we believe it should be a part of every woman's wardrobe.

The history of the wrap dress.

The wrap dress was made iconic by designer Diane von Fürstenberg in the 70s, where it became a symbol of the women's movement, but the first wrap dress saw the light of day back in the 1930s. In fact, famous designer Elsa Schiaparelli made a wrap dress in 1930 that she called an 'apron wrap dress', an effective work dress because the front of the dress could be folded over on both sides, acting as a kind of apron. This meant it could be quickly tied up and over when it got dirty in the front, so the clean side was now at the front. In 1942, American fashion designer Claire McCardell created the 'pop-over' design that became the basis for several types of wrap dresses. The fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar had held a design competition to "create something fashionable that could be worn while cleaning the house and also be worn to a cocktail party". During the war, women had new and practical tasks and less money to spend, so they had to be creative when it came to being fashionable. The wrap dress was perfect for this: it was easy to put on, easy to move around in, very versatile and had a nice, feminine cut that accentuated the curves. MCCardell won the competition and later won a design award for the 'pop-over' dress.
So, the wrap dress has been a part of women's wardrobes since the 1930s due to its versatility and good cut. Today, the wrap dress is still a popular dress model that is made in many different types, colors and prints.

Wrap dresses at Mondo Kaos.

Since the wrap dress is a classic, most brands have a wrap dress in their collection, but we want to highlight our wrap dresses from The Seamstress Of Bloomsbury. We have had this dress in our assortment for many years, and we always have a good selection in stock in different colors and prints. The dress is made of the natural Rayon material which is incredibly lightweight, and it is therefore a perfect dress to take with you in your suitcase when you go on vacation, as it takes up almost no space and is nice to wear even on hot days.

Styling your wrap dress.

As mentioned, the wrap dress is one of the most versatile types of dresses and can be styled in a myriad of ways to create the perfect look for the occasion you want to wear it to. A wrap dress can be worn in a more modern look, but you can also style it in 40s, 50s and 60s styles.
For everyday and work, wear a wrap dress with a classic wool cardigan from Emmy Design and a pair of retro lace-up shoes from Nordic ShoePeople for a cute, feminine look.
For more festive occasions, wear it as a cocktail dress and create a charming retro look with seamed socks from What Katie Did.
